Dirty Roos

Today is a double poster!

One day, not too long ago, I was ironing one of Jake's white shirts in preparation to attend the temple. Well, first I laundered the entire load of whites. Then I hung up his shirt so that it could dry. As I was shaking it out a little, adjusting sleeves and things, it seemed like one sleeve was a little heavier than it should be. I just assumed his sleeve was still inside out on itself a little bit. Me, being the lazy one that I am, my first thought was that I would fix it later. I'm that lazy.

Many hours later, I pulled it down to iron it. I started on the back, because that's what you do. I did the back, then the front panels. As I was starting on one the arms, I remembered my previous laziness and began to unfold the cuff from itself. But even after noting the sleeve was straight, the sleeve still didn't feel right. This entire time, I'm only paying half attention to my ironing because of the movie I had put on. Muppet Christmas Carol. It's the only version I know. It's the only version I care to know. Read about it here and here, buy it here. There's nothing in nature that freezes your heart like years of being alone. Just so ya know.

Anyway, so as I realized the sleeve wasn't getting fixed with my half-hearted attentions, I turned my full attention to the shirt. As I examined it, I realized that there was something in the sleeve. As I pulled it out it was a pair of my underoos that had lodged themselves into the sleeve sometime during the warsh cycle. I pulled them out and they were still dripping wet. I threw them into the dryer, which was full of the dry whites. It's okay, because my roos needed to be dried, so we'll just do them all again.

This reminded me of an incident that left me embarrassed back in my high school years. As I've mentioned, I'm sometimes unexplainably lazy. Sometimes there's no reason for what I do. It's just what I do, and the way I am. Usually, only if I feel like the only one affected by the action is me. That's why I don't always pick up my q-tips when I miss the garbage, because who's gotta pick 'em up? Me.

So one day as I was running to get from bed, to first period PreCalculus, I jumped into a pair of jeans that were piled on my bedroom floor. Minutes after arriving to class, I had pulled books out of my bag and was trying to pay attention. But I was distracted to something that I hadn't noticed before. There was something wrong with my pants. It felt like my leg was rolled up on itself, or perhaps my bag was leaning against my leg. Nope. I rubbed my leg trying to figure out what was going on. I realized there was something inside my pants. Sometimes my socks would get stuck in my pants and when they came out of the laundry and my pants had dried, the socks were usually still wet. So I sorta assumed that's what was going on.

Not so. Not so at all! As I rummaged up my pant leg to get the rogue sock, I quickly realized it didn't quite feel like a sock. I pulled whatever it was out and looked at it for a brief moment. Then I realized what it was. It was a pair of my dirty underoos! Now my adult unders are very different from what my high school unders were. Now, they're white, long and very inconspicuous. In high school they were brightly colored, brightly patterned, and I really should have instantly guessed what I was holding in my hand. In my math class. Was anybody looking at me? Did anyone see what I was holding in my hand? How quickly were they going to start pointing and laughing? Did my friends in the class across the school already know what was going on? This was pre-texting and would have had to have been spread by mouth. But this was the sort of thing that would surely peak everyone's interest. "She just pulled a pair of dirty underwear out of her pants!! HaHa!" is what they would say.

I quickly rolled them into a small ball in my hand and took a quick glance around to see who was looking in my direction. The only person that was looking at me was my dear friend Jenn, who was laughing. Lucky for me Jenn is and was a much better person than I, for if I had seen anyone do this same thing, I may have just told some people. Not everyone, but a few of our closest friends in our little group. She was the best that I could have shared that moment with.

I think that was the last time I quickly jumped into a pair of dirty pants. Even today, I tend to shake them out when I have to wear a previous pair. This high school year was the same year that my dear brother Chris was especially mischievous. During that time I went to class to find dirty socks, towels, and a smashed, raw egg in my backpack. The sock wasn't even mine if I remember correctly. Also, that egg was the worst thing to try to clean out. Jenn helped me with that, too. Try to explain that to your teacher!

Maybe there's a lesson here. Don't be lazy.

Pumpkin Cream Pie

This Thanksgiving, I wanted to try something new, and a little different than our traditional pumpkin pie. I have been following The Pioneer Woman because she is just fabulous. She is so funny, and I just love her recipes and pretty much everything about her! She has a wonderful series about how her and her husband met and courted and ended up getting married. And man, is it a good story. But, what I love are her recipes. Although, occasionally laced with alcohol, they are delish! My most recent favorite was her Pumpkin Cream Pie. Oh my. It was so yummy!

A quick synopsis:

Mix Vanilla Pudding, Half and Half, Cream, Spices (I would have added just a little bit more) to taste, whiskey, and after its boiled, pumpkin puree. So cook it, then cool it fully.

Then whip up some whip cream and brown sugar, and mix the fully cooled mixture in with it. The color kinda reminds me of this one time I used to babysit a baby, and he had just been introduced to squash... That's all.

I have a slight lack of pictures for this recipe. But here is some of the leftover graham crackers from the shell, baked/roasted and crunchy waiting for the pie to set up fully.

This is Pioneer Woman's pie pre-inhalation. Because it was really good!

Have you ever had the Pumpkin Pie milkshake from Arctic Circle? A delicious, tasty, out of character item for Arctic Circle, because the rest of their food is really only half good. Anyway, the subtle flavor reminds me of that. It's just sweet enough, but not too sweet. I would have added just a little bit extra spice because, well, I love cinnamon. The crust was perfect, it had powdered sugar and lots of butter.

If you're looking for a healthy pie, this really isn't it. But if you only eat it a day or two out of the year, I think it's totally worth it! Thank you Pioneer Woman! Oh, and if any of you start following her, you are not allowed to enter any of her contests, because then you would win and I wouldn't. Because that's the way my world works. So we'll just say you're not allowed!

Here's the printable recipe:

Recipe: Pumpkin Cream Pie

| | |

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CRUST:
  • 1-½ package Graham Crackers (about 15 Cookie Sheets)
  • ½ cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 stick Butter, Melted
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 1 box (3 Oz. Box) Vanilla Pudding (Cook And Serve Variety)
  • 1 cup Half-and-half
  • ½ cups Heavy Cream
  • Pinch Of Cinnamon
  • Pinch Of Nutmeg
  • Pinch Of Ground Cloves
  • 2 Tablespoons Whiskey (optional)
  • ½ cups (plus 3 Tablespoons) Pumpkin Puree
  • ½ cups (additional) Heavy Cream
  • 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • Extra Graham Cracker Crumbs, For Garnish

Preparation Instructions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Grind graham crackers in a food processor (or, if you don’t have a food processor, place them in a large ziploc and pound ‘em with a rolling pin.) Add powdered sugar and melted butter and process until totally combined. Press into the bottom and sides of a pie pan until nice and firm. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until warm and “set.” Remove from oven and allow crust to cool completely.

In a medium saucepan, mix dry pudding mix with half-and-half and cream. Add spices. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is bubbly and thick. Remove from heat and stir in whiskey, if using. Add pumpkin and stir to combine. Place lid on pot and set aside to cool. When cool enough, place pot in the fridge to cool completely.

When mixture is cool, remove from the fridge. In a mixing bowl, add 1/2 cup heavy cream and brown sugar. Beat until very light and fluffy. Fold in pumpkin cream mixture until combined. Pour into cooled crust.

Cover and refrigerate for a couple of hours or overnight. Serve with graham crackers crumbled on top.

Please excuse me..

I am

I have a cold. Commonly referred to as the "Common Cold."

Cut to Gilmore girls:

LORELAI: Ugh, I hate having a cold.

RORY: I know you do.

LORELAI: Ugh, it’s bad enough being sick, but anybody can have a cold.

RORY: I know they can.

LORELAI: I mean, I’d like to have a good illness, something different, impressive. Just once I’d like to be able to say, "Yeah, I’m not feeling so good, my leg is haunted."

RORY: See, there’s a reason why you only take one packet of TheraFlu at a time.

That's how I feel today. Anybody can have a cold! I want to have a better reason why I've gone through almost an entire box of Kleenex.

Why my nose won't stop running.

Get it? Runny nose??

Why I ache as if a Mac-truck has run me over.

And not the kind carrying Macs. And not Peterbilts, for dag sake.

Or why my ears and head are so stuffed up, I can barely hear anything.

Do you think this guy has any trouble hearing??

You must forgive me in my doped up state, of which I have only slight control over some of my faculties. And it's not ones that control the boogers.

Sudafed has become my best friend. We got the kind that you have to get from behind the pharmacy counter. That's the good stuff.

Ahh!! Somebody put me out of my misery!

P.S- I take no responsibility for anything said here.

An Ode

Dear Oatmeal:

How beautiful are you? You lovely hues, your earthy texture, your many healthy qualities.

You really are beautiful!

I love you in homemade cookie form.

I love you in iced form.

Grandma really does you wonderfully, too.

I could eat an entire box you you!

Squirrels love you, too!

These pigs are racing for an iced oatmeal cookie treat! I find that to be the epitome of your wonderfulness!

You are so convenient!

But I have one complaint about you. I really disliked you when I was growing up. Breakfasts were never looked forward to. Fights were fought. Even all of the apples, brown sugar and raisins could not make you taste better!

I have been wondering if this has gotten better with age and maturity. I had a bowl of you yesterday, filled with lots of yummy raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar and a little apple pie spice. The smell of the spices almost made me believe that I was going to love you!

I was wrong.

Your texture was slimy. After I got beyond the spices, your smell was icky. I nearly gagged at every spoonful. Please don't make me gag anymore. I really don't like that.

But I will continue to partake of your many other yummy, tasty, delectable products!

P.S.- I really like these oatmeal colored boots. They're very cute. Well done, Oatmeal!

Pumpkin Waffles

Last year, for Christmas, Jake got a gift basket from work. There were lots of yummy things in it, including but not limited to: chocolate covered pomegranate seeds (weird, but tasty), an assortment of fancy chocolates, random crackers, and this:

As it has been a crazy year, the two boxes have been sitting in a box, in storage, etc. So when I unpacked these a few weeks ago, my mouth started watering ferociously! I've been jonesing and waiting with sweet anticipation for the day when we share their tastiness!

Tonight was the night! And since I love chocolate chips in my pumpkin cookies/bread, we decided to sprinkle a few on before they cooked. Here's my friend just after the light on the iron went off.

Jake had his with butter and maple syrup, which I didn't think would be very good, but it turns out it was still SO good! I sprinkled powdered sugar and dolloped cool whip on top.

WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE!!
So delicious!

The Cat and the Bugs

(Warning: Overload of cat pictures!)

What is that?!?!

Do you guys see that thing!?!?!

There it is!!

Last year somebody gave us a few of these Hexbugs for Christmas. They're so cool! They are about an inch long, and they vibrate. I'm not completely sure how they work, but they go everywhere, and it drives the cat nuts!

We had forgotten about them, but today I came across them and decided to turn them on the cat. His rocking chair was his safe place. He was jumping all over it.

Several times, he tried to pick it up in his mouth, but it was vibrating and I'm not so sure he like it. He spit it out pretty quick.

The red one quit working, so we threw out the blue one, which only went in little circles. He could watch it from a secure location, of only several inches away.

Update

Well, just as a quick update. You may remember this story, and how absolutely, utterly crazy it is! Well, Mr. Crazy was sentenced on Friday. He was sentenced to a year in prison, after which he will be evaluated. If he has been good, followed the rules, etc, then he will be released, but if not, he will face two to four more years. So right this very moment, he's in prison! Which is great and will help my 'rents sleep with ease! Thanks for your concerns!

The Final Chapter

Well, today is the last post of my "This is My Life" series. I must say I've really enjoyed reminiscing all those years, and I've remembered lots that I've forgotten, and some that I kinda would like to forget! Just kidding. Mostly. I did forget to post about that time that Jenn spilled half a bottle of fingernail polish on my bed. That made my mom REALLY happy!

But, a short synopsis of the last ten years of my life:

I graduated from High School in 2000. Went to Ricks College, had AWESOME roommates! I graduated with my Associates in Ecology, Wildlife Management. I planned on going to Utah State, but decided to remain at BYU-Idaho. I met Jake the summer of 2002 in Rexburg. We were married May 3, 2003 in Idaho Falls. I graduated in 2004 with my Bachelor's in Biology, Natural Resources. We moved to Idaho Falls and bought our first house in August 2005. Jake graduated in December 2005. We lived there for five years until Jake got his job in Jackson. Now we live in Wyoming.

There ya go! I'm going to have to come up with another idea for a blog series. We'll see what comes up!

One Year in A Nutshell

In the Last Year:

  • Jake applied for a new job
  • A week later he interviewed for said job
  • One week later he got the job
  • Two weeks later, and one year ago today, he started his new job
  • We put our house up for sale
  • Jake commuted to Jackson weekly
  • Jake lived in a hotel for three of the last twelve months
  • I was released from my most favorite calling in the YW
  • I went to Jackson with Jake several times
  • Our car kicked the bucket and we had to get a truck
  • We moved to Wyoming without selling our house
  • We rented a house in Wyoming for six months
  • It snowed and snowed. And snowed.
  • Spring came and the snow was GONE!
  • Got new church callings
  • We sold our house on tax day
  • Had an awesome weekend in Provo for our anniversary
  • We spent a wonderful summer biking and enjoying Wyoming
  • Got more church callings
  • Got WY license plates, licenses, and a WY phone number
  • Been invited to dinner more times in 9 months than 10 years
  • Made an offer on an house
  • SIX weeks later we moved into our house
  • Drove 1,000 miles to our first WY college football game
  • Made a gazillion new, awesome friends
Oh my goodness, it has been one hairy year. During the hardest parts, I thought that I might not survive! I don't always handle change well. But to be completely honest there were a few things that got me through.
1. Knowing that Jake loves me lots and lots and that no matter how things were going, we would end up together in the end.
2. I have wonderful friends in Idaho Falls who totally helped me survive while Jake was gone, and the people in Wyoming are awesome and helped out to us before we even lived here!
3. The opportunity to serve in the church saved my sanity on more than one occasion. I got to serve in Idaho Falls as long as possible, and then here in Wyoming has helped immensely. It's helped me get to know the people in the area. It also helped me remember how much I love the gospel and everything involved with it.

Here's to another wonderful year!
